What does infrared thermography find in electrical equipment?
An infrared (thermal imaging) scan finds loose connections, overloaded circuits, failing breakers and unbalanced loads by the heat they give off, while the equipment stays energized and running. Problems show up as hot spots before they cause an outage or fire. Learn about our thermal imaging services.
How often should electrical equipment get an infrared scan?
NFPA 70B, which became an enforceable standard with its 2023 edition, calls for infrared inspections of most electrical equipment at least once a year, and more often for equipment in poor condition or critical service. Many plants scan critical gear quarterly or twice a year.
What is included in electrical preventive maintenance?
Typical electrical PM covers visual inspection, cleaning, torque checks on terminations, breaker exercising and testing, and documentation, scheduled so work happens during planned shutdowns instead of emergencies. See our preventive maintenance program.
Does preventive maintenance lower insurance costs?
Some property insurers credit or require infrared inspections because they reduce electrical fire risk. The amount varies by carrier, so confirm with your insurer before counting it in your savings.
Can preventive maintenance be part of a service contract?
Yes. Allied offers electrical service contracts that bundle scheduled PM and thermal imaging, including programs for manufacturing plants and data centers.
Estimates only. Results depend on the inputs entered and on assumed program effectiveness, which varies by facility, equipment age and condition. Infrared surveys are typically performed under load per NFPA 70B guidance; insurance credits are set by each carrier and are not guaranteed.
